What to do when a future employer gives you an offer below your desired pay?
There is plenty to think about when negotiating a contract with your next employer, especially in the context of inclusive hiring and diverse talent recruitment. Here, I have created a preliminary list to get you started. In today’s edition of “More information to think about even though I can barely remember if I brushed my teeth,” I will offer a simple piece of advice if it looks like you might not be getting your desired salary. Assuming you have already requested a higher wage and your employer is unwilling or unable to provide it, you must change your strategy. First, consider your personal needs above all else.
Setting Your Desired Pay Raise Date:
The main question here is: How long can I receive this salary without feeling resentful or facing financial trouble? We’ll call this your Desired Pay Raise Date. You may have two dates for this: an ideal date and a later date that you are simply not willing to budge on.
Once you have this date, the next step is to set an estimated timeline for when your salary can be revisited using your Desired Pay Raise Date as a marker. Moving forward, there are two points you need to bring up:
1. Salary Review Request:
“I’d like to be able to revisit my salary and performance within [state Desired Pay Raise Date].”
– Tip: I encourage folks to state this more as a request than a question.
2. Customary Raise Inquiry:
“What does your customary raise look like for a person performing at a high level?”
– Tip: The question you are looking to have answered here is, “What is the most I can expect to make by my Desired Pay Raise Date?” If you are more of a direct negotiator, go ahead and ask this question directly.
At the end of this conversation, you should determine if the organization values you at the rate you need to feel comfortable. With this information, you will have a clear idea of whether the role fits you and your lifestyle, especially considering the principles of people operations consulting and the goal of building diverse teams.
For those navigating the complexities of psychedelic industry recruitment or applying inclusive recruitment strategies, understanding your value and ensuring alignment with organizational values is crucial. Remember, inclusive hiring practices are designed to support diverse talent recruitment, fostering an environment where every employee can thrive.
